Their lives are filled with adventure, DIY, crafts and building, but also saving the day. They rise to the challenge and are always totally committed. Aside from the inherent risks they face professionally, these everyday heroes open themselves up to other dangers away from their jobs, which should not be underestimated. That they remain relaxed and focused as they achieve excellent results is down to their exceptional equipment. They place their trust in uvex safety products. Our real life stories allow others to share personal experiences with their favourite uvex products.

The storm in the summer of 2014 which hit Essen, Germany stopped at nothing, causing large-scale damage throughout the city. Above all it was the city’s trees which were unable to withstand the power of the storm, falling in rapid succession one after another. Markus O., a volunteer at the German Red Cross, explains in detail his work in the aftermath:

“On the evening of Monday, 09 June 2014, a brutal storm passed directly over Essen. This caused thousands of trees to be uprooted. Furthermore, in the wider Essen area, heavy rainfall flooded numerous cellars. The fire brigade sounded the alarm and called for reinforcements from the whole of North Rhine-Westphalia.

As I’m actively involved in the technical department of the German Red Cross, obviously I joined in and helped tackle the problem. We worked in collaboration with the THW (German technical relief work organisation) and the fire brigade, undertaking a whole host of operations over the following five days. We pumped water from cellars, felled several trees, cut up timber that was strewn all over the roads and pavements, and removed dead wood from the trees.

During all of these tasks, I wore uvex polo shirts, which are particularly durable (our working polo shirts are not designed for such stressful demands), various pairs of uvex safety gloves and the uvex pheos safety helmet, also each team member of our unit wore uvex safety spectacles. I personally wore the uvex i-3 variomatic and ultrasonic fire goggles, which offer UV protection. This meant I was optimally protected from the sun. We were working in temperatures of over 30°C every day. None of the glasses steamed up.

My conclusion is that there is nothing more important than reliable industrial health and safety products. The equipment lasted throughout the clean-up process of one of the worst storms to ever hit Germany and provided me with excellent protection.

In my free time I also wear uvex polo shirts and various uvex jackets from (I particularly like the new Collection 26), because I find the products to be hard-wearing and extremely weather-resistant.”

Many thanks to Mr O. for his description of the situation in Essen after the storm.

You can find a few additional pictures which show Mr O. in action here:

uvex is delighted that its industrial health and safety products are used in the private domain as well as professional working life. However, we are of course not able to ensure that the right products are used privately for the respective activity. uvex therefore does not accept any liability for the correct and appropriate application of products and their condition, nor can it be held liable for non-uvex products.
