Electricians, as would be expected, account for 49% of the construction industry fatalities due to electrocution followed by plumbers and other trades. Other tradesman are also at a substantial risk of electrocution because of exposure to electrical cables and power tools on construction sites<sup>1<\/sup>. The number of workers that may be accidentally exposed to live electricity is substantial. The construction industry is one of the largest employers in Australian accounting for 9%<sup>2<\/sup> of the workforce and workers in other industries also being potentially accidentally exposed to live electrical circuits, electrically energized conductors, parts or apparatus.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;191414&#8243;]More recently, a survey of more than 400 electrical apprentices by the Electrical Trades Union (ETU) reported that one in eight apprentices<sup>3 <\/sup>had been exposed to potentially deadly electrical shocks at work. The figure was even higher among apprentices who didn\u2019t begin classroom training until after their first year \u2014 one in four<sup>3 <\/sup>reported experiencing shocks. The same reporting noted <strong data-start=\"1888\" data-end=\"1943\">six apprentice deaths from electrocution since 2018<\/strong>. It also highlighted a 2021 case where an apprentice electrician died while working unsupervised, with two lift companies later convicted and <strong data-start=\"2086\" data-end=\"2115\">fined a combined $930,000<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Electrical hazards are serious threats in the workplace that are not easily visible to the worker. While most workers understand the risks involved with electricity and treat it with due respect, some hazards are not easily identifiable. Construction sites can be particularly dangerous due to temporary electrical supply and the nature of the work.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image media=&#8221;42957&#8243; media_width_percent=&#8221;100&#8243; uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;123314&#8243;][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;179770&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2507\" data-end=\"2840\">Most health and safety personnel only think of safety footwear as personal protective equipment to provide protection against impact injuries in the toe region. However, international safety footwear standards also outline requirements for protective features to other risks that occur in the workplace, including electrical hazards.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;299817&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2847\" data-end=\"2860\">Footwear<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2861\" data-end=\"3491\">Electrical shock resistant footwear (EH) can provide a secondary source of protection to workers who accidentally come in contact with live electrical circuits, electrically energised conductors, parts or apparatus. EH certified footwear is tested to ASTM F2413-18 and is required to resist 18,000 V at 60 Hz for 1 minute with no current flow or leakage in excess of one milliampere in dry conditions. However, EH footwear should only be used as a secondary source of protection against accidental contact with electricity and not part of primary protection plans, which aligns with the hierarchy of controls in hazard management.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3493\" data-end=\"4089\">EH footwear is required to be maintained in good condition to be an effective second line of defence to electrical shock. The electrical insulating properties of footwear can deteriorate when the footwear has an excessively worn outsole, the sole is contaminated with metal shavings and\/or the footwear has been exposed to wet and humid conditions. This level of protection is particularly beneficial in workplaces where it is more difficult to control the hazards that workers are exposed to \u2014 and the recent apprentice survey findings are a timely reminder that unexpected exposure can occur even early in a career.
