To the uninitiated – also known as “muggles” by those in the loop –geocaching usually gives rise to the idea of a couple of wacky old characters looking for Tupperware pots in the woods. That may not be completely untrue, but geocaching is becoming increasingly popular and there is, in fact, much more to it than that. In this interview, our colleague Jürgen K. explains why he thinks that geocaching is a mixture of extreme sport, family activity, puzzle and adventure.

Homestory #7: Eddie “The Eagle” on safety in sports and at work

Eddie “The Eagle” was the first (and, until 2002, the only) skier to represent Great Britain in an Olympic Ski Jumping event in the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics – and he’s been a fan of uvex ever since. Although Eddie infamously finished last in both the 70m and 90m men’s ski-jump events, he broke the British national ski-jumping record, and still holds the world record for stunt jumping after soaring over 10 cars and 6 buses.

To the untrained eye, it may seem that fly fishing just involves standing in water trying to catch fish, which may then later be served for dinner. However, for anglers it is not just the fishing itself which is their main focus. Anglers often have a strong affinity with nature and treat it with great respect, apart from also bringing them enjoyment as they discover the many new fascinating things it has to offer.
Our colleague Jürg F. from Switzerland is among them and this year embarked on a fly fishing expedition to Alaska with some of his angler friends. He talked to uvex about his experience and the role that uvex products played on his trip.

uvex: Could you please briefly describe the hobby/leisure activity in which you use uvex personal protective equipment?

JF: I am passionate about fly fishing and also help and support our club’s fish farming programme, which breeds and rears fish stocks for the region. This work has enabled me to try out a range of different products. The eagerly awaited trip to Alaska for salmon fishing was the perfect opportunity to test uvex all-weather clothing, gloves, hearing protection and above all the new uvex Polavision safety eyewear.

uvex: Which dangers and challenges do you encounter?

JF: In the fish farm I am faced with virtually all common dangers, including noise pollution from lawn mowers and brush cutters, cleaning products for the pools that can irritate the skin and handling heavy grates that can fall on the feet, to name but a few. The greatest danger when fly fishing is being hit in the face or even eye by a hook.

uvex: Which uvex products do you wear for protection?

JF: Various different hearing safety products protect me and my fellow club members from noise pollution, but the exceptional wearer comfort of my customised uvex high-fit flex earplugs particularly stands out for me
The uvex rubiflex S XG safety gloves are brilliant for pool cleaning, as they are comfortable, robust and provide excellent grip even when wet. For my feet, I find that the MACTREK GTX safety boots from Heckel are best. The GORE-TEX® membrane keeps my feet nice and dry, while the HPC toecap is great, especially in winter as they keep the cold out. I really feel the benefit of these features when I am dealing with water at sub-zero temperatures.
I am also pleased I get to wear our “own” uvex Polavision 9231 when fly fishing.
These protect my eyes excellently and the special coating prevents glare off the surface of the water so I find it easier to spot the fish.

However, even uvex does not protect against the dangerous “Alaska bug” which anglers quite often catch. 😉

uvex: Has using uvex products changed the way you practice your hobby/leisure activity?

JF: I have always worn protective equipment for my hobby, but other products just aren’t the same. This also allowed me to personally experience the comfort and stability of our products for myself. My feet were neither too hot nor too cold and I don’t need to worry about injuring my eyes.
I can fully concentrate on my hobby, safe in the knowledge that I am protected by uvex products.

We thank Jürg F. for talking to us and are pleased that uvex’s products were up to the task in Alaska.

Homestory #5: Tough Mudder

Their lives are filled with adventure, DIY, crafts and building, but also saving the day. They rise to the challenge and are always totally committed. Like many others, our colleague Manfred F. from Gedern enjoys being active and keeping fit. He has run marathons in the past, which were great experiences, but has now focused his energy on a very special activity in his spare time. For the first time, Manfred took part in the Tough Mudder race in Hesse on 10 August 2014. Tough Mudder is a team challenge in which participants must complete an 18 km obstacle course through mud and grease.  They must swim and dive through ice water, crawl through an electrically charged field of mud, scale walls slicked with butter and mud, run up a greased up quarter pipe and much more.  We interviewed Manfred to find out more about how he mastered this extreme endurance event:

uvex: Could you please briefly describe the hobby/leisure activity in which you use uvex personal protective equipment.

MF: I have loved sports for as long as I can remember and I regularly take part in long-distance runs and marathons.  At one point I just fancied a new challenge, something more demanding but still fun. A friend told me about the Tough Mudder race. My first thought was that it is absolutely crazy, but it is totally right for me!

uvex: Which dangers and challenges do you encounter?

MF: Of course, it is not entirely without risk because you are crawling through mud, climbing up wooden walls and traversing up and along ropes. Dealing with jagged rocks, wooden stakes and branches, sharp edges and all manner of slippery obstacles is all part of the fun.

uvex: How are you protected when engaging in your hobby?

MF: I wear safety gloves that fulfil a range of functions, such as providing excellent grip and protecting me from the dangers mentioned above. I also know from the areas of application for these gloves in industry that they offer extremely good slip-resistance in oily environments. Now I have put them to the test in mud as well and they passed with flying colours. 🙂

uvex: Which uvex products do you wear for protection?

MF: uvex phynomic XG safety gloves.

uvex: Has using uvex products changed the way you practice your hobby/leisure activity?

MF: The exceptional wearer properties of this product really helped me succeed in this extreme challenge. Without these gloves, I think I would have had considerable problems conquering the course, not to mention the injuries my hands would have sustained.

Many thanks to Manfred F. for the open interview! We think it’s great that you were involved in such a daring competition and wish you all the best for your sporting future!

Homestory #4: The forces of nature

The storm in the summer of 2014 which hit Essen, Germany stopped at nothing, causing large-scale damage throughout the city. Above all it was the city’s trees which were unable to withstand the power of the storm, falling  in rapid succession  one after another. Markus O., a volunteer at the German Red Cross, explains in detail his work in the aftermath:

“On the evening of Monday, 09 June 2014, a brutal storm passed directly over Essen. This caused thousands of trees to be uprooted. Furthermore, in the wider Essen area, heavy rainfall flooded numerous cellars. The fire brigade sounded the alarm and called for reinforcements from the whole of North Rhine-Westphalia.

As I’m actively involved in the technical department of the German Red Cross, obviously I joined in and helped tackle the problem. We worked in collaboration with the THW (German technical relief work organisation) and the fire brigade, undertaking a whole host of operations over the following five days. We pumped water from cellars, felled several trees, cut up timber  that was strewn all over the roads and pavements, and removed dead wood from the trees.

During all of these tasks, I wore uvex polo shirts, which are particularly durable (our working polo shirts are not designed for such stressful demands), various pairs of uvex safety gloves and the uvex pheos safety helmet, also each team member of our unit wore uvex safety spectacles. I personally wore the uvex i-3 variomatic and ultrasonic fire goggles, which offer UV protection. This meant I was optimally protected from the sun. We were working in temperatures of over 30°C every day. None of the glasses steamed up.

My conclusion is that there is nothing more important than reliable industrial health and safety products. The equipment lasted throughout the clean-up process of one of the worst storms to ever hit Germany and provided me with excellent protection.

In my free time I also wear uvex polo shirts and various uvex jackets from (I particularly like the new Collection 26), because I find the products to be hard-wearing and extremely weather-resistant.”

Many thanks to Mr O. for his description of the situation in Essen after the storm.

Passionate climber Paul G. talks about protecting himself from dangers.

uvex: Could you please briefly describe the hobby/leisure activity in which you use uvex personal protective equipment.

PG: In my spare time, I most like to be outdoors. I use uvex products when I am cycling or in the mountains, where I can enjoy many different activities. In winter I often go on ski tours, while I love to go hiking in the summer. When possible, I also like to go along a fixed-rope or via ferrata climbing trail, and I sometimes tackle an easier climbing wall up a rock face.

uvex: Which dangers and challenges do you encounter?

PG: There are many hazards when climbing and hiking. There is always a risk of falling, or of rockslides, while more difficult, overhanging terrain increases the danger of colliding into rock faces. Of course, the weather also plays a major role and it is very important up keep an eye on that. Reliable safety equipment is absolutely essential, as is having a climbing partner on whom you can depend.

uvex: How are you protected when engaging in your hobby?

PG: Alongside the standard planning for a tour, such as determining the route and checking the weather forecast, it is important to have the right equipment, including a harness, climbing ropes, different carabiners, hexes and a climbing helmet.

uvex: Which uvex products do you wear for protection?

PG: My climbing helmet is uvex pheos alpine.

uvex: Has using uvex products changed the way you practice your hobby/leisure activity?

PG: I feel so much safer now that I have replaced my old helmet, which was looking rather worse for wear. The uvex helmet is also extremely comfortable and considerably lighter than my previous helmet. This really helps reduce strain on the neck, especially when climbing where you have to look up quite a lot.

uvex: Do you have any photos of yourself in action, which we can put on our Facebook page?

PG: Yes, these pictures show me training in the climbing garden at Bad Heilbrunn with my son.

Paul G. and his son are a glowing example of how to climb, not forgetting their safety as they have fun and seek a little adrenaline rush. We thank Paul G. and his son, Benedikt, for talking to us and sharing their wonderful pictures. We hope they enjoy many more safe mountain tours in Germany.

Christian G. from Forchheim is a project manager in the machine construction industry by profession, but in his spare time, he loves to potter away in his craft room in the cellar. In the interview below he tells us how he protects himself from danger in his hobby:

homestory2_hobbykelleruvex: Could you please briefly describe the hobby in which you use uvex personal protective equipment?

CG: I predominantly use uvex products for DIY tasks at home.  Whenever I am drilling, turning, working with a chainsaw, milling or grinding, I wear uvex safety spectacles.

uvex: Which dangers and challenges do you encounter?

CG: The main issue is chips and shavings that fly around following any such rotary activity, which can be dangerous if they go in my eyes.

uvex: How are you protected when engaging in your hobby?

CG: My protection comprises suitable clothing, safety gloves, hearing protection, dust mask and safety spectacles.

uvex: Which uvex products do you wear for protection?

CG: I use uvex hearing protection as well as the safety eyewear.

uvex: Has using uvex products changed the way you practice your hobby?

CG: By using these products, I feel safer when I carrying out such activities and am therefore able to better concentrate on the task in hand.

Christian G. clearly explains that the right level of protection is not just important at work, but also for hobbies and DIY at home. As a rule, it is important to always be suitably protected when working with machines, even at home, and not to treat personal safety lightly.
Thank you for talking to us, Christian G. We wish him all the best and continued pleasure as he safely continues as a hobby craftsman.
