The number of people being diagnosed with diabetes is rising constantly. In Germany alone, it is estimated that around nine million people live with the disease today. Diabetics who must wear safety footwear are particularly at risk.

Diabetes is a disease which primarily affects sugar metabolism, although in certain circumstances it also affects the skin’s equilibrium. In this way, defective nerves hinder the skin’s ability to regulate moisture levels. This results in very dry skin with reduced elasticity. The danger of skin calluses and tears forming is therefore increased, while there is an additional risk of germs penetrating the skin and causing infection.

However, nerve disorders also entail a reduced sensitivity to pain: pressure and abrasion points in shoes can no longer be felt properly, increasing the possibility of injury resulting from chafing. Nevertheless, these injuries can be prevented and sensibly counteracted if the shoes to be worn are broad enough and the caps are sufficiently high.

1) The width of the shoes and boots is over 15, while the toe cap is extremely high and wide. This protects even the broadest feet and, as the case may be, hammer and claw toes, by providing sufficient room and flexibility.

2) The orthopaedic construction set provides experts with sufficient opportunity to include thick padding and other elements designed to increase comfort. The maximum insole thickness must be less then the protective toe cap of 10mm (in standard safety shoes this is just 3mm) and less than the heel of 15 mm (6mm in standard safety shoes). This means that special diabetes insoles can be inserted without problem.

3) The lining and seams are designed in such a way to ensure that the majority of padding requirements are met.

4) In addition, the boots offer individually adjustable stability features around the ankle and lower leg. This ultimately allows any potential issues with twisted ankles or, in certain cases, even foot drop (dorsiflexion) to be prevented.
