Nahcomfort lenses for uvex computer glasses
If you would like to order uvex VDU spectacles with a blue light filter for close-up work, all you need to do is provide your optician with the relevant close-range values and your preferred design (Type A, B or C). The specific height should be measured on the basis of the main line of sight. However, it is essential to ensure a minimum fitting height of 17 mm in the frame.

But apart from the design, you’re also interested in how computer glasses work. In the following paragraphs, we explain what makes prescription computer glasses special and what effect they have.
What are VDU spectacles?
VDU spectacles, also known as computer glasses or screen glasses, are a visual aid individually tailored to the demands of working in front of a screen. What makes VDU spectacles special is the viewing distance for which they are optimised:
- Normally, the lenses in traditional reading glasses designed to correct a visual impairment are calculated for a viewing distance of approximately 30 cm (reading distance).
- However, a screen is usually situated approximately 50 cm – 80 cm from the human eye and therefore lies well beyond the normal field of vision.
- In order to constantly compensate for these varying viewing distances during desk-based work, spectacle wearers are repeatedly forced to adopt unnatural head and body postures.
- This can lead to a wide variety of posture-related complaints, such as strain on the shoulder and neck muscles, signs of fatigue or headaches.
The situation is different, however, with specialised computer glasses. These are fitted with lenses designed for multiple viewing distances and adapt to the visual demands. Thanks to these computer glasses, the field of vision is extended to a distance of approximately 50 cm to 80 cm from the screen. This means you can not only see the details on the monitor more clearly, but also the keyboard, mouse and people around you. This relieves strain on the eyes and ensures ergonomic and comfortable working.
For most people who wear reading glasses or varifocals in their daily lives, VDU spectacles are therefore highly recommended, particularly if they spend a great deal of time working at a computer and therefore looking at a monitor, and there is no requirement to wear safety glasses.
How computer glasses work
The lenses in VDU spectacles are specially treated. They are ground to specific distances encountered when working at a computer screen. This enables ergonomic working in front of the monitor. It is important that the lenses not only have a special grind but are also fitted with useful coatings.
How are the lenses in computer glasses constructed?
The lower section features the correction for near vision, known as the reading power.
Towards the top, the lens’s corrective power gradually decreases. This allows the wearer to see clearly and distinctly up to a distance of 2 metres. The transitions between the different vision zones are seamless. The lenses of these computer glasses are also anti-reflective and fitted with a blue light filter.
UV blue – VDU spectacles with a blue light-reducing filter
A blue light filter is a surface finish consisting of several layers. This finish filters out short-wave visible light in the blue-violet range to prevent eye-related headaches while working on a computer. uvex glasses with a blue light filter come with the uvex UV blue coating system, a super anti-reflective coating and a scratch-resistant coating as standard.
Blue-violet light is emitted primarily by screens. The blue light filter helps to prevent symptoms of fatigue and headaches caused by prolonged work at a monitor.
Anti-reflection coating on computer glasses
When working at a computer, light comes from various directions. To ensure that your vision is not impaired, the lenses should have an anti-reflective coating.
Anti-reflection coating is a special layer that is vapour-deposited onto both the outer and inner surfaces of the lenses. It significantly reduces reflections on the lens surfaces. It also offers a cosmetic benefit and increases light transmission. Three grades are available: standard anti-reflection coating, multi-layer anti-reflection coating and super anti-reflection coating.
What standard anti-reflection coating offers:
- good reduction in reflections
- metal oxides vapour-deposited once per surface
- Residual reflection of around 4 per cent

Tinted VDU spectacles for protection against glare
To make working under bright office lighting and computer screens even more comfortable, computer glasses can be fitted with a tint available in four different shades.

Working with a computer causes fatigue in the eyes and leads to tension in the body. In order to continuously focus on different distances, spectacle wearers are constantly forced to adopt unnatural head and body postures. This can lead to the following typical complaints:

- rapid onset of fatigue and reduced ability to concentrate

Digital eye strain
Working in front of a screen is tough on our eyes. Regardless of whether it is a normal computer, a laptop, a smartphone or a tablet, screens almost exclusively affect where we look and at what distance.
We glance back and forth between the screen and the foreground up to 33,000 times, but almost never look further away. Moreover, when using a screen for hours at a time, we barely move our eyes at all. This puts our eyes under a great deal of strain. Further compounding this are visual display unit reflections and flickers as well as the unpleasant contrast between the foreground and the background.
On any given day, differences in light levels can trigger anywhere between 4,000 and 17,000 pupil reactions. This is all extremely tiring for our eyes. Scientists and doctors call this “digital eye strain”.

When are computer glasses needed?
Computer or VDU spectacles are particularly necessary when people spend the majority of their working hours in front of a monitor and can no longer see the information on it clearly. This applies above all to people who wear glasses, but also to those who are developing age-related long-sightedness.
From the early 40s onwards, most people’s eyesight begins to decline. There are entirely natural reasons for this: presbyopia sets in – the lens gradually loses its elasticity and becomes less and less able to adjust to different viewing distances. This cannot be prevented. For most activities, reading glasses or varifocals are then helpful.
In everyday life, a pair of varifocals or reading glasses is usually sufficient. However , when working at a computer, reading glasses and varifocals quickly reach their limits: reading glasses are only suitable for close-up distances of up to 40 centimetres, but not for the viewing distance required for a screen, which is between 40 and 70 centimetres. Progressive lenses are not ideal here either. Progressive lenses only correct the viewing distance – which is so important for screen work – in a narrow lower section of the lens.

What happens if you work without VDU spectacles?
Anyone working at a computer whilst wearing reading glasses or varifocals runs the risk of having to change their posture in order to see the different areas of focus more clearly. The consequences include a tense posture, damage to eye health and fatigue. With computer glasses, you can clearly see the screen, keyboard, documents or the person you’re talking to at all times, without having to tilt your head back or tuck your chin into your chest. Your posture remains relaxed, your eyes have to strain less and you can maintain concentration for longer.
With varifocals, the wearer raises their head to be able to see through the small area which adjusts vision for mid-range distances. The neck is tense.
With reading glasses, the wearer tends to lean towards the screen. This puts strain on the back and the neck.
With computer glasses, the wearer has relaxed posture and can see well at all relevant distances.
What else can computer glasses be used for?

In short: for all close-up tasks or wherever a clear view at short and medium distances is required.
However, they are not suitable for driving, as they do not provide sharp vision at a distance!
Who pays for computer workstation glasses?
Ergonomics and health in the workplace are covered by health and safety legislation. Anyone who spends a lot of time working at a computer screen is therefore entitled to a pair of individually fitted glasses with a blue light filter. These are classified as personal protective equipment:
A prerequisite is a medical prescription from an ophthalmologist or a certificate from an optician. If this is provided, the employer is obliged to contribute towards the costs or to grant a subsidy.
As a rule, the employer covers the cost of a basic model that meets ergonomic requirements. If employees wish to have additional features – such as special lenses, filters or a higher-quality frame – this may incur an extra charge, which the employees must then pay themselves in the form of a co-payment. In some cases, partial reimbursement or a co-payment by the employer is also possible, depending on internal guidelines.
- The work to be carried out can only be done using a device with a monitor.
- The computer is used on a daily basis.
- It requires concentration and attention to the monitor to ensure that no errors with significant consequences are made.
- Special skills and knowledge are required to carry out the tasks on the monitor.
If at least three of these statements apply, the employer must cover the cost of the computer glasses. This also applies to employment in the public sector.
