A safety shoe provides reliable protection against falling objects or nail penetration. But as soon as sparks fly or molten metal splashes, that’s no longer enough. Welding boots and foundry boots are designed to address three key safety challenges:

What safety class should welding shoes have?

Welding boots are generally classified as protection class S3 and also meet a range of additional standard requirements. An overview of the most important additional markings:

Sustainability in uvex welding and foundry boots

The uvex 3 MACSOLE® welder combines many sustainable components. The MACSOLE planet outsole consists of 30% recycled rubber offcuts while maintaining the same thermal and mechanical performance. It significantly reduces material consumption. uvex also uses recycled materials in other components. The insole is made from 38% recycled polyester, whilst the footbed is made from up to 72% recycled material. The midsole contains recycled PU offcuts from the manufacturer’s own production process. 

The uvex 3 foundry boot offers excellent protection when working with molten metal. It features an outsole made from 38% recycled polyester. The insole contains up to 55% recycled material (PU foam, GRS-certified polyester).

S3 welding boots with HI and HRO ratings meet the minimum requirements for standard welding applications. Anyone working with molten iron or aluminium in a foundry also requires Fe or Al protection, as well as footwear designed for rapid removal in an emergency. 

What standards must welding boots meet?

The foundation is the European standard EN ISO 20345, which defines the essential requirements for safety footwear. In addition, EN ISO 20349-1 and EN ISO 20349-2 apply specifically to footwear for foundry workers and welders. These standards set out requirements for flame resistance, contact heat resistance, thermal insulation, and protection against molten metal and metal splashes.

Together, they establish the mandatory performance requirements for footwear used in metalworking, welding and foundry environments. The uvex MACSOLE rubber outsole meets the HRO requirement for heat resistance and is SRC certified for maximum slip resistance.

Which materials are best suited for welding boots?

The upper material plays a key role in determining how well the footwear withstands sparks and heat. Leather has long been the material of choice, thanks to its flame-retardant properties and excellent thermal protection. For the upper, uvex uses moisture-repellent leather combined with heat-resistant seams. This helps prevent steam burns caused by the combination of moisture and extreme heat.

Rubber is the preferred material for the outsole. Conventional PU outsoles can lose their structural integrity when exposed to high temperatures. The uvex MACSOLE rubber outsole is made from a specially developed rubber compound that retains its shape even when in direct contact with hot surfaces. The tread pattern remains intact throughout the footwear's service life, ensuring reliable slip resistance. On wet or contaminated surfaces, these slip-resistant welding boots provide enhanced safety and secure footing.

Depending on the model, uvex uses either i-PUREnrj technology or EVA inserts in the midsole. Both solutions help absorb impact forces and provide additional walking comfort. 

How do welding boots and foundry boots protect against sparks and welding spatter?

Footwear can only provide full protection when it incorporates the following features:

  • Heat-resistant seams: Conventional stitching can be damaged by direct exposure to sparks, whereas heat-resistant seams maintain their integrity.
  • Gusseted tongue and covered lacing: The enclosed tongue design helps prevent welding spatter and metal particles from entering the footwear.
  • Lace cover: A leather cover protects the laces from flying sparks and helps prevent them from igniting or melting.
  • Protective toe cap: An additional protective toe-cap layer helps shield the front of the boot from falling metal parts and molten metal splashes.

When working in foundries where molten metal is present, another critical factor comes into play: in an emergency, the footwear must be removable as quickly as possible. A quick-release fastening system allows each boot to be removed in less than five seconds. This can be crucial in the event of an accident involving molten metal. 

Which welding boots are suitable for outdoor use?

Outdoor welding combines the heat-related hazards of welding with the mechanical demands of construction and infrastructure environments. This requires footwear that can handle both challenges. A welding boot designed for outdoor use therefore needs a profiled outsole that provides reliable grip on loose or uneven surfaces, as well as a water-repellent upper material.

The uvex MACSOLE rubber outsole combines both benefits in a single solution. Its deep tread pattern provides secure traction on wet, slippery or contaminated surfaces, while the water-repellent leather upper helps keep moisture out. As a result, uvex welding boots are well suited not only for indoor applications, but also for outdoor installations, construction sites and infrastructure projects where welding work is carried out outdoors.

What features are important in welding and foundry boots for long shifts?

Welders and foundry workers often spend long hours standing on hot, hard surfaces. For this reason, comfort, cushioning and a proper fit are important safety factors. Fatigue can reduce concentration and increase the risk of accidents.

The proven i-PUREnrj midsole technology used in the welding boot provides excellent cushioning. It absorbs impact forces and returns part of that energy to the wearer with every step. This helps reduce strain on muscles and joints during long shifts.

In the foundry boot, EVA inserts in the heel and forefoot provide effective cushioning and support. In models featuring uvex Weave technology, sole weight is further reduced by up to 20%, helping to improve wearer comfort throughout the working day.

Additional comfort is provided by the antistatic comfort insole, which can be removed and replaced if required. 

Which foundry boots are suitable for extreme heat?

For applications involving extreme heat, the standard HI rating alone is not sufficient. Foundry boots also carry additional markings for protection against 

  • heat and flames
  • molten iron (Fe) and 
  • molten aluminium (Al). 

These ratings confirm that the footwear is designed for use in extreme thermal environments.

The MACSOLE rubber outsole withstands short-term contact heat of up to 300°C. In addition, the specially designed upper construction helps prevent molten metal from entering the footwear. The quick-release fastening system allows the boot to be removed immediately in an emergency, helping to reduce the risk of serious injury. 

How do I look after welding boots properly?

Welding boots require regular care, as flying sparks, heat and chemicals take their toll on the leather and sole over time. The following steps help extend the service life while maintaining its protective performance:

  • Clean after every use: Remove metal debris, slag and dirt from the tread of the outsole, as dirty soles significantly reduce slip resistance.
  • Condition the leather regularly: A suitable leather conditioner keeps the water-repellent upper material supple and helps to repel water.
  • Check the lacing and lace covers: Regularly inspect leather covers and laces for burn marks and wear, and replace them if necessary.
  • Replace the insole: Replace the insole regularly, as it directly absorbs sweat and impact. It wears out over time, meaning the shoe no longer provides optimal protection.
  • Check the sole for cracks: Inspect the MACSOLE rubber sole for cracks or delamination, as deep cracks can compromise thermal insulation.
  • Store in a cool, dry place: Never store welding boots whilst they are wet, as moisture damages the leather and affects the seams.

A well-maintained welder’s boot offers longer-lasting and more reliable protection. If the upper material or outsole shows signs of cracking, or if the laces show signs of melting, the footwear should be replaced immediately.

When are your welding boots or foundry boots no longer safe to use?

Welding boots do not lose their protective function suddenly, but gradually. The following overview shows which signs of wear indicate that they need to be replaced immediately:

Replace immediately if:

  • The outsole shows deep cracks or delamination. It therefore no longer provides heat insulation.
  • The outer shoe material has burnt-through areas or deep burn cracks that extend down to the inner layer.
  • The dust tongue or lace cover shows signs of melting that prevent the shoe from being sealed tightly.
  • The protective toe cap has been impacted and shows signs of deformation.
  • The puncture-resistant insert has been damaged or penetrated.

Monitor the footwear closely and inspect it if:

  • The sole tread is significantly worn and slip resistance on smooth floors is reduced.
  • The laces or quick-release fastening are difficult to use or no longer close securely.
  • The inner sole is permanently deformed and can no longer regain its shape.
  • The outer shoe material no longer absorbs the leather care product sufficiently and the water-repellent effect is diminishing.
  • The upper becomes unusually stiff after cleaning.

Rule of thumb: You should check your safety shoes for foundry workers and welders regularly. Intensive daily use in foundry or welding environments will naturally shorten the service life of the footwear.
